About the Product
A mouth guard is typically worn during sports to protect teeth from physical impact. A night guard is worn while sleeping to prevent damage from bruxism (teeth grinding) and jaw clenching.
Night guards are designed for all-night comfort with materials that cushion the jaw muscles and protect tooth enamel from grinding forces. They are not interchangeable with sports mouth guards.
Yes. We use the same dental-grade lab materials - acrylic and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) - used by professional dental laboratories supplying dentist offices across the US.
Our founder has over 16 years of dental health experience and personally oversees the quality standards on every order. Multiple customers have confirmed their DentalNightGuard.com guard matched or exceeded the quality of guards they previously paid $600-$800 for at the dentist.
- Soft (1-3mm EVA): Best for light to moderate grinders. Thin, flexible, comfortable. Barely noticeable during sleep. Good for first-time users and those with a sensitive gag reflex.
- Hard (rigid acrylic): Best for heavy grinders. Maximum durability and protection. Rigid construction withstands severe grinding forces. Lasts longer than soft guards.
- Dual Laminate Hybrid (2mm): Best for TMJ and severe bruxism. Combines a soft inner layer for all-night comfort with a hard outer shell for maximum protection.
If unsure which is right for you, visit our Compare Guards page for a full breakdown.
- 1mm: Very thin and barely noticeable. Good for mild clenching or first-time users who prefer minimal bulk.
- 2mm: Most popular choice. Excellent balance of protection and comfort for moderate to heavy grinding.
- 3mm: Maximum coverage. Best for heavy grinders needing the most protection. Also the standard thickness for the Multicolor Life guard.
When in doubt, 2mm is the most commonly chosen and recommended starting thickness for most grinders.
Both are equally effective. Most dentists recommend upper arch night guards because they tend to feel more stable and are easier to adapt to. However, some people prefer lower arch guards if they find upper guards uncomfortable or if their dentist specifically recommends a lower guard for their bite pattern.
During checkout you select which arch you want your guard made for. If you want guards for both, simply place two separate orders.
Yes. Night guards help reduce the muscle strain and joint pressure caused by nocturnal jaw clenching and teeth grinding. By providing a cushioned surface between your upper and lower teeth, a night guard helps distribute bite forces more evenly, reducing tension on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
For TMJ sufferers and severe clenchers, we recommend the Dual Laminate Hybrid guard, which combines a soft inner layer for comfort with a hard outer shell for maximum force distribution.
With proper care, lab-grade custom night guards typically last 2 to 5 years. Hard acrylic guards last longer because they are more resistant to grinding wear. Soft guards may need replacing sooner (1-3 years) depending on grinding severity.
Signs it is time to replace your guard: visible cracks or splits, holes worn through, guard no longer fits snugly, or you are biting through it in your sleep.
The Process
Not at all. Most customers complete their impressions in about 15 minutes. Your kit includes clear step-by-step photo instructions that walk you through the process from start to finish. The dental putty sets in just a few minutes, making the process quick and straightforward.
If your impressions do not come out right on the first attempt, simply contact us and we will send a free replacement kit, no questions asked.
- Dental impression trays (upper and lower arch sizes)
- Two-part dental-grade impression putty
- Step-by-step photo instruction guide
- Pre-paid return envelope for mailing impressions back
- Storage case (sent with your finished guard)
No problem at all. If your impressions do not meet our laboratory quality standards, we will contact you immediately and send a completely free replacement kit. There is no additional charge. We want your guard to fit perfectly, and we will not craft a guard from inadequate impressions.
No dentist visit is required. The entire process happens from home. However, we do recommend consulting a dentist first if you have: loose teeth or dental work that is not fully healed, severe TMJ disorder requiring clinical assessment, ongoing dental pain, or braces or dentures.

Most dental insurance plans do not directly cover online-purchased night guards. However, HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) funds can be used to purchase night guards from DentalNightGuard.com. Even without insurance coverage, at $99-$149 our guards are significantly less expensive than the $400-$800 dentist price even after insurance copays.
Yes. Dental night guards are eligible HSA and FSA expenses. You can use your HSA or FSA debit card directly at checkout on our website just like any other payment method.
Care and Maintenance
- Daily: Rinse with cool water immediately after use. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste - it is abrasive).
- Weekly: Deep clean with a denture cleaning tablet or mild antibacterial soap. Soak for 15-20 minutes then rinse thoroughly.
- Storage: Let air dry completely before placing in the case. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Never: Use hot water, boil it, use toothpaste, or store it wet.
New dental acrylic guards may have a slight chemical smell when first received. This is completely normal and harmless - it is the scent of fresh dental acrylic material. Rinse the guard thoroughly with cool water before first use. The odor dissipates within a few days of use and regular cleaning.
